This drum was acquired by my grandmother as a gift to my father in 1928 in San Pedro, California. I recently had it appraised by an antique dealer and was told it was from about 1840 but was unable to identify tribal affiliation. It is 10” in diameter and 6 7/8” high and is made of wood and deer hide. I was told it was from a “plains Indian tribe” with the top of hide from a buck or stag deer and the bottom from a doe or female deer. There is both black and green color on the sides and may have been a ceremonial drum. I am unable to confirm this but the patena confirms it is quite old.
