This art has been carved on a solid wood plank, measuring: 24 1/4 inches in width, by 13 inches in height. The wood has been carved so as to accent and outline both the dancing women and the instruments they are playing. The carving is something akin to graphic relief carving. This creates shadow lines that serve to accent the three women and their movement. It is well crafted and well painted. The colors a rich and bold, without any fading whatsoever.
I have traveled to the continent of Africa on seven occasions. This was always for work. While there I would take time to visit artists of many disciplines. There are a multitude of artists who carve, paint, sculpt, and sew nearly everything that one can find in western countries. In Africa almost everything is very labor intensive and must be hand made. Of such is this wall carving and painting.
