AVE MARIA! O MAIDEN, OMOTHER. Lyrics are presented here in a handsome 8" x 10" frame with wall mount and easel-back, in Brand New condition.

The lyrics for this hymn are attributed to “Sister M.” A school songbookpublished in 1900 cites this anthem from an 1862 collection entitledSt. Patrick's Catholic Hymnal, so the hymn's origin wascertainly prior to 1862. Nicola Montani, editor of the popular St.Gregory Hymnal in 1920, creditsthe melody as found in a Slovak hymnal and ascribes the lyrics to“Sister M.”

Thus it appears that, with no clue as to who she was or where she wasfrom, “Sister M” wished to remain anonymous. Like the writers ofmany earlier hymns, the only reward this author wanted was to upliftthe hearts of people to Christ and His mother.

Asfor the title “Star of the Sea” given to Mary here and elsewhere,St. Jerome in the 4thcentury seems to be responsible. Jerome proposed that “Mary” wasrelated to the name “Miriam” (the name of Moses's older sister),and that both names derived from Hebrew meaning “drop of the sea” -- in Latin, stilla maris. A copyist then, accidentally or on purpose, transcribed this asstella maris or “starof the sea.” By the dawn of the Middle Ages, the title had won wideacceptance. In the early 1200s the foundation church of theCarmelite Order in Haifa was named Stella Maris [Star of the Sea].

Tosailors in ages past the night stars meant survival. Without thestars, before modern technology, they wouldn’t know where they weregoing. The stars at sea represented, in a way, their salvation andpointed the way to safety. So, it was concluded, Mary, as Star ofthe Sea, directs us to safety, to salvation, as she guides us to thesafe harbor of her Son.
