.DESCRIPTION & CONDITION

Up for sale is this marvelous, early original soapstone carving of a male eskimo playing his drum by the well recognized Inuit artist Luke (Lukie) Airut (b. 1942) in Igloolik, Canada\'s Nunavut Territory.Luke, better known by his nickname \"Lukie\", started carving at the age of 25 (1967) after realizing that he could earn extra cash like his artist father George Kappianaq did. He learned how to carve stone and bone from his father and another Inuit artist Pacome Kolaut. As time passed, he realized that stone was his prefered medium, because it allowed his imagination to be realized with more ease and this piece your offerding on, appears to be from that early period of the 1970\'s. However, the drum and drum stick are not original to this piece and appears to have been done in the last couple of years. The original drum set would have been done in bone or ivory. That being said, whomever made this drum set, did a very nice job in making it look original to piece and it looks great together. Luke also learned to work with different metals at Arctic College and along with his wife created and sold jewellery. Today he is a more well rounded and more refined carver, working with bone and stone in larger scale and in a very detailed manner. His works today are in many collections and fetch in the thousands of dollars. Condition of this piece is perfect for it\'s age, with very minor pin head size or smaller nicks throughout, but nothing that detracts from displaying it. A very nice example of Lukie\'s early work as a naive carver and a great example of inuit figure carvings. Please look over photos carefully and ask questions before offerding.
