1920's CMTC Trench Art Antique Banjo 4 String WWII Hero Col. Matt Konop:
$499.99
Matt F. Konop's personalized trench art four string banjo. Mr. Konop later Lt. Col. Konop was part of the US Army's Civilian Military Training Corps (CMTC) which held summer camps to provide a backup source of army officers during the peace time army. These camps were not only a source of education, but for many a source of three square meals a day during the Depression. Untold men attended one or all of the camps but less than 5000 later accepted officer commissions when war came. Mr. Konop was one of those although now married with three small children. He entered service with the rank of Captain in the 2nd Div., promoted Lt. Col by the time he landed at Normandy the day after D Day. At the Battle of the Bulge Konop led a hastily organized group of clerks, cooks and drivers to stop a German SS Panzer platoon assault. Most famously Konop was assigned to lead the division's advance party to liberate a Czech town that had been home to his maternal grandmother. His grandson later took Col. Konop's personal memoirs and produced a play "THE ACCIDENTAL HERO". Banjo is damaged as shown- section of wood body missing, banjo head is unfortunately torn. Head bears a well executed ink drawing of a man dreaming of his woman, surrounded by the dates and names of camps he attended as a CMTC cadet. Truly a fascinating historical relic.
