· The story of Musicland:

·

Musicland began as a company about adecade after the beginnings of the LP retail record store business. In the late1940s, Sam \"Goody\" Gutowitz (1904-1991) of New York City opened asmall store on New York\'s 9th Avenue shortly after the advent of vinyllong-playing records. Although he did some retail business, most of his volumewas in mail-order sales at discount prices.

In 1950 Pickwick Records (originallyformed as Pickwick Sales Corporation, later Pickwick International) was foundedby Cy Leslie and marketed primarily children\'s records. In 1951 SamGutowitz established a chain of record stores called Sam Goody.

In 1956 Musicland started with a singleretail outlet near downtown Minneapolis. One of the founders, Terry Evenson, had opened his first music store in his hometown of Cloquet, Minnesota, whilestill a teenager eight years earlier. Evenson led a dance band while in collegeand, after serving in the Korean War, resettled in Minneapolis. There, he and formerband member Grover Sayre launched the Musicland business.

In 1957 Pickwick entered the LP marketwith low-priced records, beginning with their Design label. In 1964 Evenson andSayre sold their interest in Musicland, now a chain of 15 retail stores, toAmos and Dan Heilicher, who were veterans of record distribution since the1930s and had supplied Evenson with prerecorded music since his early days inCloquet. Musicland expanded rapidly to 48 stores under their management andmerged with J.L. Marsh.

In 1967 Pickwick International, now amusic and book production, distribution, and merchandising corporation with 300retail outlets.

In 1968 Musicland merged with PickwickInternational. The Heilicher brothers headed Musicland\'s distribution and retailingdivisions. In 1976-Amos Heilicher had a falling-out with the Pickwick board andsold his stake in the company. In 1977 American Can Company purchased PickwickInternational.

At that time Pickwick was the largestrecord distributor in the US and UK and had 280 retail record shops.Unfortunately, a Pickwick record generally meant poor quality, both in therecording and the vinyl itself. As one critic noted, it was at one time “one ofthe largest purveyors of junk records in the world.” Often a record claimingto be by a known artist turned out to be re-recorded by someone else.

In 1978 American Can Company purchasedthe Sam Goody chain. Musicland stores transitioned to Sam Goody stores. Most of its Sam Goody stores werelocated in shopping malls. The company helped launch the careers of manynotable artist, including Michael Jackson. In 1986, the first Suncoast MotionPicture Company store was opened as Paramount Pictures (the name change wouldcome in 1988.) This store concept specialized in movies and movie memorabilia, also located in shopping malls.

In 1987 Musicland\'s president and 15other senior managers purchased Musicland from American Can and the companybecame privately-held. In November Musicland staged “Minnesota’s largestgroundbreaking” to celebrate a new addition to its distribution center. 280employees, each with a shovel, formed a giant M on the lawn, attempting to getinto the Guinness Book of Records.

In1992, Musicland launched a major initiative with the rollout of its big-box MediaPlay concept. Media Play was a chain of retail superstores that sold movies on video,DVDs, music, electronics, video games, books, toys, and games in the UnitedStates. Each store essentially contained a book store, a movie store, a musicstore, and a video game store under one roof.

Attheir height, Musicaland operated 72 Media Play stores in 19 states with 2,000employees. The first store opened in Rockford, Illinois, in 1992. Hundreds ofstores were slated to open, but only 89 ever were. Mostly freestanding, thestores averaged a massive 45,000 square feet in metropolitan areas. During thesame period, the company also developed a small market Media Play by opening OnCue stores across the country as well. These \"small town Media Plays\"also sold Music, Books and Movies, as well as musical instruments and gavesmall towns that were not near a major metro a place for great selection.
