Thequartetconsisted of lead singerRosetta Hightower(June 23, 1944 – August 2, 2014),Shirley Brickley (December 9, 1944 – October 13, 1977), Marlena Davis (October4, 1944 – February 27, 1993) and Stephen Caldwell (born November 22, 1942). Beforethey became the Orlons, they were an all-girlquintetcalled Audrey and the Teenettes. They formed inthe late 1950s in junior high school and consisted of Hightower, Davis, andthree Brickleysisters: Shirley, Jean, and Audrey.However, after the Brickleys\' mother did not permit 13-year-old Audrey to singin certain nightclubs with the group, she and Jean quit, making the groupatrio. In high school, the group\'s three remaining membersdiscovered fellow student Stephen Caldwell, who was lead singer of a localgroup called the Romeos. Impressed, they invited him to join the group in 1960and named themselves the Orlons as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the friendlyrivalry they had with a popular group at their high school, the Cashmeres.(Orlonwasa brand name for the widely usedsynthetic fiberacrylic.) A high school friend,Dovellslead singerLen Barry, encouraged them to audition forCameo-Parkway Recordsatthe turn of the decade. The group took his advice in the fall of 1961, but wererejected at first, although the record label signed the group after two moreauditions. Cameo executiveDave Appellappointed Hightower as the lead singer, andbegan writing songs for them. In 1962, the group providedback-up vocalsforDee Dee Sharp\'s hits \"Mashed Potato Time\"and \"Gravy (For My MashedPotatoes)\". They later found fame with their firstnationalhit, \"The Wah-Watusi\", which reached No. 2 in the USpopchartand whichtriggered the briefWatusidance craze.Theyrecordedtheirown versionsof the Dee Dee Sharp songs for their debutalbum,The Wah-Watusi, which received a rating of 4.5 out of 5fromAllMusicin 2006.They had a second hit in the sameyear with \"Don\'t Hang Up\",a No. 4 hit on the pop chart. The group had three hits in 1963: \"South Street\", thegroup\'s last Top Ten hit, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard chart; \"NotMe\", which reached No. 12; and \"Crossfire\", the group\'s lasthit, which reached No. 19. They also recorded a version of theBobby Rydellhit \"The Cha-Cha-Cha\", whichincludes the line \"When you see the Wah-Watusi, you go a-ha-ha-ha,\"poking fun at their own hit. Davis left the group in August 1963 and Caldwellquit the group in 1964,Sandy Person replaced Davis. A short-livedstint by Yvonne Young was followed by original Teenette, Audrey Brickley,Shirley\'s sister. By then, the group\'s popularity had waned in theUnited States. They continued to perform into the late 1960s with success inthe UK. They disbanded in 1968 after Hightower decided to stay in England afteratour.Hightower had a successful career as asoloistand as an in-demandsession singer, backingJoe Cocker,John Holtand otherartists. She married record producer Ian Green. In later years, Davis marriedand found work as an executive secretary, whilst Caldwell became ashop stewardof the bus drivers\' trade union, and thenbecame the administrator of the union\'s legal fund in Philadelphia and servedon thePhiladelphia Board ofEducationfor 29 years. In 1988, Caldwell and Davis re-formedthe group with two new members and performed live on the oldies circuit untilDavis\' death in 1993. On October 13, 1977, Shirley Brickley was shot dead by anintruder in her home in Philadelphia. Marlena Davis died oflung canceron February 27, 1993 (aged 48). AudreyBrickley died ofacuterespiratory distress syndromeon July 3, 2005 (aged 58).Caldwell and Jean Brickley still perform as the Orlons with two of Caldwell\'scousins, Alberta Crump and Madeline Morris. In March 2012, Caldwell andBrickley took part in the benefit single \"Mull of Kintyre\",featuringCharlie GraciewithClutch Cargo. Rosetta Hightower Green died inClapham, London, on August 2, 2014, at the age of 70.
