TheHuman Beinz(/ˈbiːɪnz/BEE-inz)is anAmericanrockband fromYoungstown, Ohio. Originally known as The Human Beingz, theband initially featured John "Dick" Belley (vocals, guitar), Joe"Ting" Markulin (vocals, guitar), Mel Pachuta (vocals, bass), andGary Coates (drums), later replaced by Mike Tatman. Theironly hit record, "Nobody butMe", peaked in 1968 at number 8 on theBillboard Hot 100. TheBeinz started in 1964 as The Premiers, launching their professional career tobuild a local fan base. In 1966, they changed their name to The Human Beingzbecause they felt their old name did not fit with the feel of the late 1960s.They recordedcoversof songsbyThem,The Yardbirds,The WhoandBob Dylan. The group was also the first to record a cover of"Gloria" by Them, which became a hit forThe Shadows of Knight, andcovered "The Pied Piper",which later became a hit forCrispian St. Peters. Thegroup signed toCapitol Recordsin1967 and at that time Capitol misspelled their name, leaving out the"g". Capitol's purported idea was to affiliate the band's name withtheHuman Be-Inmovement of 1967. The Beingz were told itwould be changed on the next release if the debut single did not have anysuccess. On 24 August 1967 "Nobody ButMe" was releasedand became their onlyBillboardTop 40hit, which meant that Capitol would not correct the spelling. "Nobody ButMe" (written and first recorded byThe Isley Brothersin1962) peaked at No.8 in February 1968. The recording's two 31-foldrepetitions of the word "no" fulfillCasey Kasem's "Book of Records" category of mostrepetitive word or phrase in a Hot 100 top 10 hit, besting the 26-foldrepetition of "I know" inBill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine".Analbum,Nobody But Me, followed. The Beinz' nextsingle, "Turn On Your Love Light,"peaked No.80 but becamea huge hit inJapan, where it peaked at No.1."Turn On Your Love Light", originally ahit forBobby Blandin 1962,was later covered byJerry Lee Lewisand theGrateful Dead. In 1968, Capitol released a second album,Evolutions. They also released the single, "Hold on Baby", exclusively in Japan, where it also hit the top of the charts. The band underwent a contractuallyobligated tour of Japan as a result of their success there and broke upimmediately thereafter in March 1969. In 2003, The Human Beinz were among thebands featured in theRock and Roll Hall of FameexhibitHang on Sloopy: The Music of Ohio. On display were a white Fender bass used byMel Pachuta and a black Edwardian jacket worn by Ting Markulin. In 2004,Quentin Tarantinoused "Nobody But Me" inhisfilmKill Bill: Vol. 1, although it did notappear on the moviesoundtrack. The same song was on twocompilation albums:ESPN'sThe Greatest Crowd-Rockin' Anthems Of All TimeandJ&RMusic World Presents Rock And Roll's GreatestHits Of All Time. The song made yet another appearance inMartin Scorsese's 2006 filmThe Departed. It was also featured in theseventh-season premiereofthe American comedy television series,The Office.
