After their very first concert, in 1995, identical twin brothers Joel (Vocals) and Benji Madden (Vocals/Guitar) formed Good Charlotte with their high school pal Paul Thomas (Bass). Another schoolmate, Aaron (Drums), dropped his football position to join the group. In 1998 good Charlotte moved to Maryland to catch in on the rising music scene. Taking up a bevy of odd jobs to pay rent, the band became a local fixture by playing every single gig they could in Annapolis. Billy Martin (Guitar) joined in after seeing the guys play acoustically at a local haunt.
Breaking ground at top speed the band, who was yet to be signed, began opening for groups such as Blink 182, Bad Religion, and Lit. Local radio station WHFS took notice and soon asked Good Charlotte to play some station gigs. They were then asked to play in the stations HFStival on their first and second stages. Word about the talented quintet traveled faster than a concord.
WPLY, a Philadelphia rock station, ended up with a a demo of the band and began playing it on air. The demo entitled "Little Things" amassed an immediate following. Battling other songs on air, the single went through the roof and instantly caught the ear of many record companies.
In 2000 Good Charlotte released their self titled debut album under Epic Records. Landing a spot as MTV as VJ's for All things Rock, the twins got mad exposure which only boosted the groups image. With the release of the Young and the Hopeless the band found themselves whirling quickly to the top once again, but this time with major mainstream success. Successful touring kept the alternative punk band flying high for the release of their 2004 album, The Chronicles of Life and Death, which once again proved to cement their reputation as a thriving rock band.
