NO DOUBT In the world of corrupting music about suicide, murders and
killings, the punk-guitar sound of No Doubt gives an upbeat riff to
the ears of listeners. Band vocalist Gwen Stefani, bassist Tony
Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young plunk an
acknowledgment to the fact that music doesnt have to be
disheartening to be worthy of listening. The band members came
together in the summer of 1986, a summer that changed music history.
They, like all music rookies, played at house parties and basement
parties until their name got around. Their first authorized show was
at Fender's in Long Beach, CA in March of 1987. This horn-friendly
posse has put out 6 albums. Their first album released in 1992,
self-titled. Second album put out in 1995, The Beacon Street
Collection. Tragic Kingdom, out on October of 1995. Return of Saturn
released April 11, 2000, and Rock Steady put out December 11, 2001.
And an album of their hit singles from 1992-2003 called The
Singles. Gwen and Eric Stefani's parents were inspired by folk music such
as Bob Dylan and Emmy Lou Harris. Music ran through the household all
their lives. Eric became fascinated with an English ska band,
Madness. Eric soon started singing and playing piano to his Madness
albums. As the music ran more rapidly in his veins, he started
getting vocal ideas and trying to persuade his thirteen year old
sister, Gwen, to sing his ideas while he played. I
couldnt sing, she could, said Eric. In spring 1987 Gwen,
Eric and a friend John Spence conjured a band. No doubt was one of
John's preferred phrases and seemed like a positive and uplifting
phrase to name themselves after, therefore No Doubt became the name
that this Emmy winning band has taken on. John Spence was the main
central position of the band. After a month they had a drummer and a
horns section and became a 7-piece band. Tony Kanal thought No Doubt
was sensational when he first saw them live. Then a week later
auditioned for them as Bassist. After only two songs he coupled the
band when he was barely 16. Gwen was 17, and one night in June she
decided to make her move. The couple hid their relationship in
apprehension of others judgment. No Doubts immense show was coming
up. John had pushed everyone to play everyday and as many gigs as
they could to get ready. In little time before their big concert was
to be performed, John Spence committed suicide when he was only 18.
Later the band found the talent of Tom Dumont, just after Gwen and
Tony admitted their love to the rest of the band members. No Doubt started opening shows for bands like Red Hot Chili
Peppers. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers helped the band get
their first record going in the studios. Adrian Young had tried out
to be the bands drummer. He fibbed and said hed been playing
the drums for eight years, when in actuality it was only a year and a
half. No matter how long he had been playing in actuality, he still
seemed high-quality enough to be the new drummer of the impish posse
No Doubt. Band vocalist Gwen Stefani, bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist
Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young are No Doubt. Arika Vigil - December 2003
